Candidates for Breast Reduction
Reduction mammoplasty is intended for adult men and women in good health. We do not recommend surgery if you smoke or suffer from serious medical conditions that can increase your risk for complications.
During your consultation, we will discuss the goals you have for treatment. Breast reduction surgery is best suited for patients with both aesthetic and functional concerns. If you are mainly interested in modifying the shape and perkiness of your chest rather than the size, you may be a better candidate for a breast lift.
It is important to have a positive mindset and realistic elections before undergoing plastic surgery. While reduction mammoplasty can provide incredible relief and cosmetic enhancement, it is not a magic cure for all body insecurities. Please talk to Dr. Kopchinski openly and honestly about your reasons for considering breast reduction surgery so he can help guide you towards making the best decisions for your body and overall well-being.
Your Personalized Consultation and Treatment Plan
If breast reduction is right for you, we will move on to the planning phase of your treatment. Dr. Kopchinski creates a custom surgical plan for every patient based on their body type, preferences, and goals.
When planning your treatment, we will perform a comprehensive examination and take photos and measurements of your breasts. Dr. Kopchinski will then explain your options and what the intended results will look like on your body.

Modern Surgical Techniques
The incision is made around the perimeter of the areola resulting in a highly discreet scar. A circular incision works best for less extensive revisions, as access to the breast tissue and skin remains limited.
The inverted-T, also known as the anchor incision, provides comprehensive access to the breast area and is suitable for moderate to substantial reduction procedures. This incision extends down vertically under the nipple and across the crease at the base of the breast mound.
A lollipop incision goes around the edges of the areola and extends vertically down to the crease of the breast. Good candidates have a moderate amount of excess breast tissue and skin.
Is Breast Reduction Covered by Insurance?
Breast reduction is reconstructive in nature, meaning that some health insurance providers may cover part of the cost of this procedure. Our San Antonio practice accepts many types of insurance to help keep your treatment as affordable as possible. A member of our medical team will be glad to contact your health insurance provider for details about your benefits.
If you are uninsured or have concerns about remaining out-of-pocket expenses, consider flexible financing. Our practice takes plans through a wide range of third-party lenders, including CareCredit®, Prosper® Healthcare Lending, and Alphaeon® Credit.
Your one-on-one consultation is a great opportunity to ask questions about breast reduction costs and payment options. We will provide you with a transparent overview of all surgery, anesthesiologist, and lab fees to ensure you are well-informed about your treatment expenses.

A Closer Look at the Procedure
Depending on your treatment plan, we may schedule your plastic surgery at our San Antonio outpatient facility or a local hospital to keep you under observation for the first night. Breast reduction typically takes between two and five hours and consists of the following steps:
A surgical drain will be placed after surgery to prevent fluid buildup.
Our practice is committed to attentive and personalized care throughout your treatment and recovery process. After the surgery, you will have access to Dr. Kopchinski's personal cell number in case you need to reach him after office hours. If you have questions or concerns at any time, day or night, do not hesitate to reach out, and we will assist you as best as possible.
What to Expect During Recovery
You can anticipate certain side effects like swelling, bruising, and soreness around your chest in the days following surgery. Dr. Kopchinski may prescribe pain medication or other antibiotics to reduce discomfort and the chance of infection.
We will provide you with a surgical bra (a chest compression garment) to wear in the first week to improve circulation and support the chest as you heal. Change your bandages as instructed and avoid wearing any clothing that could irritate the area.
Get plenty of rest in the first few days after your surgery. You will be at a reduced capacity initially, so you might want to plan for a friend or family member to assist you around the house, particularly in the first 48 hours. You can return to work with the doctor's permission in about one to two weeks, but avoid exercise and strenuous activity in the first month.
