What Can a Breast Reduction Do for You?

Breast reduction surgery can improve the symmetry and aesthetics of your breasts and also relieve pain by removing the weight you carry on your chest each day. If your breast reduction is considered medically necessary, it should be covered at least partially by insurance. Our San Antonio, TX, plastic surgery practice accepts many types of insurance, and we'll work with your provider to maximize your benefits.

What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

There are several different types of surgical breast enhancement. Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is uniquely designed to remove excess tissue and loose skin around the breasts. We may also use liposuction to remove fat cells from the chest region.

There are several reasons to undergo breast reduction. Some patients develop disproportionately large breasts during puberty, while others notice cosmetic changes after childbirth or extreme weight loss.

Real, Remarkable Results

Our doctor approaches each case individually, utilizing his artistic skill to provide breast reductions that reduce breast size while enhancing appearance.

But nothing says more about our doctor's ability than the real results he has already provided to so many who visit our San Antonio, TX, plastic surgery office. Don't just take our word for it; see for yourself.

Candidates for Breast Reduction

Dr. Kopchinski will first meet with you for a consultation at our San Antonio practice to determine if you qualify for plastic surgery. We take several factors into consideration when evaluating your candidacy.

Reduction mammoplasty is intended for adult men and women in good health. We do not recommend surgery if you smoke or suffer from serious medical conditions that can increase your risk for complications.

During your consultation, we will discuss the goals you have for treatment. Breast reduction surgery is best suited for patients with both aesthetic and functional concerns. If you are mainly interested in modifying the shape and perkiness of your chest rather than the size, you may be a better candidate for a breast lift.

It is important to have a positive mindset and realistic elections before undergoing plastic surgery. While reduction mammoplasty can provide incredible relief and cosmetic enhancement, it is not a magic cure for all body insecurities. Please talk to Dr. Kopchinski openly and honestly about your reasons for considering breast reduction surgery so he can help guide you towards making the best decisions for your body and overall well-being.

Surgery Can Also  Address the Areolas

You should know that a breast reduction can also reduce the size of the areas, the darker tissue around the nipples. This can help make them more proportional to your new breast size.

Is Breast Reduction Covered by Insurance?

Breast reduction is reconstructive in nature, meaning that some health insurance providers may cover part of the cost of this procedure. Our San Antonio practice accepts many types of insurance to help keep your treatment as affordable as possible. A member of our medical team will be glad to contact your health insurance provider for details about your benefits.

If you are uninsured or have concerns about remaining out-of-pocket expenses, consider flexible financing. Our practice takes plans through a wide range of third-party lenders, including CareCredit®, Prosper® Healthcare Lending, and Alphaeon® Credit.

Your one-on-one consultation is a great opportunity to ask questions about breast reduction costs and payment options. We will provide you with a transparent overview of all surgery, anesthesiologist, and lab fees to ensure you are well-informed about your treatment expenses.

How to Prepare for Best Results Before Your Surgery

Dr. Kopchinsky regularly performs surgery at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, which has earned accreditation from the Joint Commission based upon the hospital's elite levels of safety and care standards. Our doctor will give you personalized instructions to follow before your arrival at the hospital. Common pre-operative guidelines include:

  • Receiving a baseline mammogram that will be compared to future mammograms to monitor breast tissue health.
  • Stopping smoking a month before your surgery. Doing so lessens the risk of a variety of surgical complications.
  • Modifying medications in consultation with Dr. Kopchinski. For example, blood thinners and anti-inflammatories should be avoided.

A Closer Look at the Procedure What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

Depending on your treatment plan, we may schedule your plastic surgery at our San Antonio office or a local hospital to keep you under observation for the first night. Breast reduction typically takes between two and five hours and consists of the following steps:

A surgical drain will be placed after surgery to prevent fluid buildup.
A surgical drain will be placed after surgery to prevent fluid buildup.

We begin by administering general anesthesia, inducing a sleep-like state before your surgery.

Dr. Kopchinski makes incisions around the nipple and areola that extend down the breast mound in cases involving more extensive revisions.

Cosmetic Modifications

Next, we remove excess tissue and trim away loose skin. We may also incorporate liposuction to eliminate a greater amount of fat in the region. The skin is redraped over the chest and pulled tight, and the nipple repositioned higher up on the breast mound.

Finishing Touches

When the reduction is complete, we close the incisions with sutures and place a surgical drain to prevent fluid buildup in the first few days. Finally, the chest is bound in gauze to protect the incisions as you recover.

Prestige Cosmetic Surgery in San Antonio is committed to attentive and personalized care throughout your treatment and recovery process. After the surgery, you will have access to Dr. Kopchinski's personal cell number in case you need to reach him after office hours. If you have questions or concerns at any time, day or night, do not hesitate to reach out, and we will assist you as best as possible.

What to Expect During Recovery

We ask that you carefully follow all postoperative recovery instructions to prevent complications and ensure the best aesthetic results. Recovery typically involves:

You can anticipate certain side effects like swelling, bruising, and soreness around your chest in the days following surgery. Dr. Kopchinski may prescribe pain medication or other antibiotics to reduce discomfort and the chance of infection.

Breast Care

We will provide you with a surgical bra (a chest compression garment) to wear in the first week to improve circulation and support the chest as you heal. Change your bandages as instructed and avoid wearing any clothing that could irritate the area.

Get plenty of rest in the first few days after your surgery. You will be at a reduced capacity initially, so you might want to plan for a friend or family member to assist you around the house, particularly in the first 48 hours. You can return to work with the doctor's permission in about one to two weeks, but avoid exercise and strenuous physical activity in the first month.

Imagine Your Results

Breast reduction results are both permanent and immediately apparent. Your improvements will continue to settle over the first few months after surgery.

It should be noted that pregnancy and any major changes in your weight can significantly impact results. Dr. Kopchinsky will draw upon his decades of experience to advise you about what behaviors to avoid so that you can maximize your breast reduction.

A Breast Lift May Be Your Solution To Reposition Sagging Breast Tissue

Our plastic surgeon performs a wide array of transformative surgical procedures. Some women who think they need a breast reduction may actually benefit more from a breast lift surgery. Others may only achieve the level of results they desire by combining the two operations. Let's take a closer look at how a breast lift may benefit you.

A breast lift, or mastopexy, provides patients with a more youthful, perky-looking bust through the removal of excess skin and the tightening of remaining breast tissue. Overly large breasts can lead to the development of excess skin, which a breast lift can address. While a breast lift does not change the size of breasts, it can make them appear smaller by repositioning their location.

It is quite common for a women who is seeking a breast reduction to suffer from excess tissue and sagging skin. If this is your situation, you may want to discuss a combination of the two procedures with Dr. Kopchinski.

Many Other Procedures Can Augment Your Results

As a board-certified surgeon with many decades of experience, Dr. Kopchinski has the skill and knowledge necessary to tailor virtually any combination of the procedures he offers to your unique needs.

Many women see significant breast changes after giving birth, alongside other changes to the body. Because so many patients want to address these issues and reclaim their pre-pregnancy bodies, our surgeon offers mommy makeovers – customized combinations of various cosmetic surgeries. Beyond a breast reduction or breast lift, your mommy makeover can include:

Dr. Kopchinski can remove fat from almost any area of your body using liposuction. Dr. Kopchinskiuses liposuction techniques that have been finely honed over many decades.

Tummy Tuck

Our surgeon can perform a tummy tuck surgery to remove excess skin around your belly. In addition to skin removal, a tummy tuck can be performed to repair abdominal muscles that were loosened during pregnancy.

Arm Lift

Loose and wobbly skin can develop on the underarms. Unfortunately, this accumulation is extraordinarily resistant to diet and exercise. Through an arm lift, our surgeon can permanently remove this unwanted skin.

Thigh Lift

Similar to an arm lift, the fat in the upper thighs is incredibly stubborn and for some patients essentially impossible to lose with healthy eating and exercise alone. A thigh lift can address this issue through artistic plastic surgery.

You Don't Need to Be a Mom For a Mommy Makeover

"Mommy makeover" is simply the colloquial term for a combination of cosmetic procedures designed to enhance a woman's appearance after she's experienced changes to her body – changes that often follow pregnancy and breastfeeding, but may also be because of weight loss or the natural aging process. You can discuss any combination of surgeries you want with our board-certified surgeon.
